The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended the Association of Resident Doctors, FCTA (ARD-FCTA), for suspending their indefinite strike, describing the move as a decision taken in the interest of residents and the nation.
The ARD-FCTA, which comprises doctors in 14 district and general hospitals as well as the Department of Public Health under the FCTA, had embarked on strike last Monday to press for their demands after months of unresolved negotiations.
Their demands included:
-
Payment of salary arrears ranging from one to six months for members employed since 2023.
-
Immediate recruitment of new staff.
-
Settlement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund.
-
Payment of arrears arising from the 25–35% upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
Speaking on Friday during the flag-off of the Northern Parkway construction project, Wike praised the doctors for their decision to return to work. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Chief of Staff, the FCT Civil Service Commission Chairman, the Acting Head of Service, and the Special Adviser on Administration for facilitating the resolution.
“First of all, let me thank the resident doctors of the FCT who have seen reasons for them to call off their strike, for the interest of the FCT, and for the interest of the nation,” Wike said.
The suspension of the strike comes as a relief to residents who depend on FCT hospitals for essential healthcare services.
