The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has officially launched the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) initiative, a project designed to bridge climate information gaps and strengthen Nigeria’s resilience against weather and climate-induced disasters.
The launch, held in Abuja on Tuesday, was described as a milestone in national development by NiMet’s Director-General/CEO and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organisation, Prof. Charles Anosike.
“Today is the celebration of a vision brought to life through consistency, partnership, and a shared commitment to national development,” Anosike said.
A Year of Collaboration
The ENACTS initiative is the product of over a year of collaboration between NiMet, Sahel Consulting Limited, and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation under the Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project.
According to Anosike, the project will strengthen infrastructure for early warning systems and improve climate early actions by providing relevant and timely climate data for decision-making across key socioeconomic sectors.
Addressing Climate Information Gaps
Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, Anosike said:
“In this era of climate change, the need for accurate, timely, and accessible climate information has never been more critical. ENACTS is our strategic response to the challenge of the climate information gap. It is a transformative initiative designed to make climate information more accessible, relevant, and actionable for all Nigerians.”
By bridging these gaps, the project aims to ensure that communities, policymakers, and businesses are better equipped to anticipate, adapt, and respond to climate-related risks, thereby safeguarding livelihoods and boosting resilience.
