The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) will open on 23 September 2025 in New York, with the theme *“Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”*
Spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation, which includes Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, other ministers, and senior officials. Nigeria’s participation will focus on economic growth, peace and security, human rights, humanitarian coordination, justice and international law, disarmament, and cooperation against crime and terrorism.
Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on 24 September, outlining the country’s contributions to global peace, security, and climate action. Nigeria will also take part in several high-level side events, including the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, a roundtable on energy and security in the Gulf of Guinea, and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium on digital transformation and AfCFTA digital trade policies.
