The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Morrison Ogbonna, was found dead in his hotel room in Calabar early on the morning of September 18, 2025. According to reports, his officers discovered his body after knocking without response while attempting to pick him up for a scheduled assignment; hotel management then opened the room to find him lifeless. Ogbonna had been transferred to the state command in August 2025, replacing Rachel Umebuali. The Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, confirmed the incident but stated that the cause of death could not be disclosed at the time.
