The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) issued a statement urging the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) to settle its outstanding debt of ₦949.88 million (as of the end of August 2025) and its August bill of ₦108.95 million in full within 10 working days, or face potential disconnection of electricity services. KEDCO emphasized that no payments have been made for electricity consumed at the hospital’s staff residential complex, which has negatively impacted service delivery and the company’s operations.
The company clarified that a recent power outage at the hospital stemmed from a “severe fault” during an ongoing exercise to separate supply lines for the main hospital campus (connected to a priority 33kV feeder with 22 hours of daily supply) from non-essential areas like staff quarters, not from a deliberate disconnection. KEDCO denied any link to reported patient deaths in the ICU, stating that power has since been restored to critical health facilities and that such services remain a top priority, while appealing for AKTH’s cooperation in the separation process.
