U.S. authorities have arrested Nathalie Rose Jones, a 50-year-old woman from Lafayette, Indiana, for allegedly plotting to kidnap and assassinate President Donald Trump.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Jones was taken into custody on August 16 after traveling to Washington, D.C., where she reportedly intended to carry out her plan. Investigators said she posted graphic threats on Facebook and Instagram, including a chilling statement about “sacrificially killing” the president and staging an “arrest and removal ceremony.”
The U.S. Secret Service launched an investigation and identified Jones as the author of the threats. During questioning, she admitted making the statements and told agents she would attempt to kill Trump “if given the opportunity,” claiming she wanted to avenge lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, she later recanted.
Jones has been charged with threatening the life of the president and transmitting interstate communications containing threats, both federal crimes punishable by up to five years in prison each.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro emphasized that threats against the President will be met with “swift and unwavering prosecution.” Jones reportedly has a history of mental illness, and her legal representation remains unclear.
