Five law enforcement officers were shot in York County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday afternoon, September 17, while serving a warrant.
According to reports, three Northern York Regional Police Department officers are in grave condition, one officer is in critical condition, and a York County Sheriff’s deputy was also injured. The suspected shooter is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The first 911 call came in from North Codorus Township at 2:10 p.m., according to Ted Czech of the York County Office of Emergency Management. Pennsylvania State Police are leading the investigation.
A heavy police presence was seen at the scene, and a medical helicopter transported victims to WellSpan York Hospital, where two individuals are being treated in serious condition under “enhanced security protocols.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he has been briefed and is heading to the scene, urging residents to follow police instructions. Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Attorney General Dave Sunday also asked locals to avoid the area and offered prayers for those affected.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for the Spring Grove Area School District but was lifted before 5 p.m.
