Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has admitted regret over his heated confrontation with Liverpool supporters during Tuesday night’s dramatic UEFA Champions League opener at Anfield.
The incident followed Virgil van Dijk’s 92nd-minute winner, which sealed a 3-2 victory for the home side.
Simeone’s Confrontation at Anfield
Simeone appeared visibly agitated after the late goal, reacting to taunts from a small group of Liverpool fans near the dugout. According to BBC Sport, he complained to the fourth official as stewards stepped in to diffuse the situation. The 55-year-old Argentine had to be restrained and eventually sent off after refusing to calm down.
Witnesses said Simeone continued his protests as he was escorted down the tunnel, still gesturing angrily at officials and fans.
Post-Match Apology
In his post-match press conference, Simeone expressed remorse:
“Firstly, I regret the part I played. It’s clear we are in a position where we do not have the right to react, and it is not good when we react.”
However, the Atletico boss criticized the atmosphere at Anfield, alleging that his staff and players endured “insults for the whole game.”
What’s Next?
UEFA is expected to review the referee’s report, and Simeone could face further disciplinary action, including a possible touchline ban.
