An autopsy has confirmed that Demartravion “Trey” Reed, the 21-year-old Delta State University student found hanging from a tree earlier this week, died by suicide.
According to the Cleveland Police Department, the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be hanging, consistent with initial investigations. Toxicology results are still pending and could take several weeks.
Police stated that all case files have been forwarded to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for further review.
Reed, a Grenada, Mississippi native, was found dead on campus Monday. Authorities say no foul play is suspected. The Clarion Ledger reported that, in a separate incident on the same day, a 36-year-old man named Cory Zukatis was also found hanging from a tree about 100 miles south of Delta State.
Reed’s family attorney, Vanessa Jones, said the family was first told he was found in his dorm room and expressed frustration over what they consider a lack of transparency in the investigation.
