At least seven people have been confirmed dead in the Afriland Tower fire Lagos incident that occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The blaze, which gutted the high-rise building in Marina, Lagos Island, left several others severely injured. Doctors across Lagos are still battling to save lives, with survivors receiving treatment in different hospitals.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) confirmed that four of its staff members lost their lives in the fire. The deceased were working on the sixth and seventh floors of Afriland Tower when the incident occurred.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, 11 people were evacuated from the building, with five successfully resuscitated. However, eyewitness videos shared online showed panicked occupants jumping from the tower, while others were rescued using ladders by passersby before firefighters arrived.
The Afriland Tower inferno was one of two separate fires recorded on Lagos Island on the same day. Another blaze erupted at Mandilas Market and adjoining plazas on Taiwo Street, destroying goods worth millions of naira and displacing several traders.
Police and emergency officials have since cordoned off the Afriland Tower site as investigations continue into the cause of the fire.
