Bayelsa Police reject ₦4m bribe in one of Nigeria’s most shocking corruption attempts. The suspect, George Idumangi, linked to the murder of estate agent Richard Ekpebu, allegedly tried to buy his freedom with cash.
Idumangi was arrested on Monday by Nigerian Immigration Service officers in Festac Town, Lagos, while collecting his international passport. His capture followed joint efforts by Immigration, Operation Puff Adder, and the Area E Police Command.
Idumangi’s Bribe Attempts to Bayelsa Police
During the arrest, Idumangi offered ₦4 million to immigration officers so they would not hand him over. When this failed, he allegedly promised ₦2 million to delete a sensitive file from his mobile phone. In desperation, he raised the offer to ₦3 million for the phone to be destroyed before being passed to the Bayelsa Police.
Bayelsa Police reject ₦4m bribe attempts, standing firm against corruption and protecting critical evidence.
When Operation Puff Adder operatives, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo, arrived to take custody of the suspect, Idumangi once again offered ₦4 million. However, Bayelsa Police rejected ₦4m bribe pressures and warned him about obstructing justice.
The suspect’s international passport and mobile phone remain in Operation Puff Adder’s custody as he is transferred to Yenagoa for trial.
Police investigations show that Idumangi did not act alone. Other suspects include Victor Shadrack (Doggy), a man nicknamed Insurance, and Miss Victory Benard Henry, who allegedly received ₦1 million for her involvement.
Bayelsa Police spokesperson SP Musa Mohammed confirmed that George Idumangi attempted to bribe both immigration and police operatives. He praised officers for refusing the offers and ensuring justice is pursued.
“This case shows our commitment to integrity,” Mohammed said. “Bayelsa Police reject ₦4m bribe attempts and remain focused on delivering justice for the late Richard Ekpebu.”
The case highlights the need for inter-agency cooperation in Nigeria’s fight against violent crime and corruption. By ensuring Bayelsa Police reject ₦4m bribe attempts, security agencies send a strong signal that justice cannot be bought.
