The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officially launched the deployment of state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, to enhance traffic monitoring, security surveillance, and public safety across Lagos, Nigeria. This initiative marks a significant shift toward advanced digital intelligence in traffic management, aiming to address the city’s chronic traffic congestion and improve road safety. The drones provide real-time aerial oversight of major roads, enabling LASTMA to proactively manage traffic flow, respond to accidents and emergencies, and address security threats more effectively.
The launch, described as a “watershed moment” by LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritizes a smarter and safer Lagos. The drones offer high-definition aerial reconnaissance, facilitating faster response times, reducing travel delays, and promoting road discipline among motorists. Unlike traditional reactive enforcement methods, this technology allows for predictive operations, giving LASTMA a strategic edge in managing Lagos’s complex traffic landscape. The initiative complements existing tools, such as the toll-free hotline (080000527862), which the public can use to report traffic incidents or emergencies.
