The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, announced on September 17, 2025, during a press briefing in Abuja, that the Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed N330 billion in direct cash transfers to poor and vulnerable households under the revamped National Social Safety Net Programme. He stated that the initiative was designed to cushion the impact of recent economic reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation on low income Nigerians, with payments structured as three tranches of N25,000 per eligible household.
Edun explained that the programme, managed through the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), has reached 8.11 million households so far (54% of the 19.7 million targeted, covering over 70 million vulnerable Nigerians registered via the National Social Register and National Identity Number integration). Of these, 2.75 million have received the second tranche, and 2.43 million have completed all three. The North-West region received the largest share (about 72% of disbursements), while the South accounted for 28%. He emphasized that the programme will now be institutionalized and included in the annual federal budget for sustainability, transparency, and accountability, describing it as a key part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategy to convert economic reforms into tangible results for an inclusive economy.
