The devastating fire outbreak at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, has claimed the lives of four Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) staff members. The blaze originated in the building’s basement inverter room and rapidly spread, impacting FIRS offices on the sixth and seventh floors. The deceased were identified as Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager). Their loss has deeply affected the FIRS community and beyond.FIRS security personnel quickly alerted emergency services, but thick smoke hindered rescue operations, complicating efforts to save those trapped.
The agency has expressed profound sorrow and is providing support to the families of the deceased. FIRS is also working with authorities to investigate the fire’s cause and is reviewing safety protocols across its offices nationwide to prevent future tragedies.
