A tragic incident occurred on Friday morning in Amakpu Okuku community, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, when a man identified only as Odomma, allegedly took his own life after years of financial hardship and family neglect.
The deceased, said to be in his 50s and a father of four, earned a living selling water in jerry cans and buckets. Residents disclosed that he had struggled for years to provide for his family but was overwhelmed by poverty.
His body was discovered hanging in an uncompleted building near his residence as locals headed out for their daily activities.
According to community members, Odomma had threatened suicide about three months earlier, lamenting that his wife and children had allegedly stopped giving him food because he could no longer provide for them.
A resident, identified as Ikenna, told reporters that the deceased had often voiced his frustrations.
“He said if the situation continued, he would take his life to end the misery. We advised him to report the matter to the village head, but sadly, he chose this path,” Ikenna said.
The tragedy has left the community in shock, with some residents questioning how poverty and neglect pushed him to such a devastating end.
Rising Suicide Cases and Mental Health Concerns
This incident adds to growing concerns about mental health struggles and suicide cases in Nigeria, often linked to economic hardship, unemployment, and lack of family or social support.
Health experts continue to urge communities to provide support systems for vulnerable individuals and to treat mental health challenges with the same urgency as physical health issues.
