The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across the country to participate in the sighting of the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447 AH.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Prof. Sambo Junaidu (Wazirin Sokoto), announced that Saturday, August 23, 2025, which corresponds to the 29th day of Safar 1447 AH, has been designated for the moon sighting.
Muslims are encouraged to report any sighting of the crescent to the nearest District or Village Head, who will then communicate the information to the Sultanate Council. The Sultan emphasized the importance of this religious duty, which marks the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, celebrated for the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Prof. Junaidu prayed for Allah’s guidance, saying, “May Allah (SWT) help us in this duty.”
This annual exercise remains a significant spiritual responsibility for Muslims in Nigeria and beyond.
